The Literary Award has been granted by the City Council in Stalowa Wola to honor the multicultural aspects of this publication. In his book, Dr. Sangare interprets the tale of Othello as the story of a contemporary hero who devotes his life to civil service. In this respect it is essentially a story of dashed hopes and lost identity, although the traditionally emphasized theme of jealousy is given its full due as well. Professor Sangare also analyzes many productions and interpretations of Othello, including those of Orson Welles, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, and Laurence Fishburne.

The title is granted by the City’s Mayor and the Artistic Director of the City Cultural Center to selected individuals in recognition of their lifetime achievements and contributions to the popularization of the heritage of Stalowa Wola.

The official presentation took place on December 18th, 2011 at the City Cultural Center. In his public affirmation addressed to Omar, Mayor Andrzej Szlezak expressed his congratulations and best wishes for future scholarly and artistic projects. This special event was concluded with a spontaneous standing ovation.

United Solo Theatre Festival is an annual international festival for solo performances held in New York City. Through a diverse range of one-person shows, we explore and celebrate the uniqueness of the individual. From openly solicited submissions, we stage the most intriguing productions at the highly acclaimed Theatre ROW in the heart of the New York City theatre district on 42nd Street.

The 2nd annual United Solo, the world’s largest solo theatre festival, presents 77 productions this year. Featured solo artists come from 4 continents, and represent 11 states of the USA as well as Argentina, Austria, Bulgaria, Botswana, Canada, Ireland, Israel, The Netherlands, Poland, and Serbia. 29 one-man and 48 one-woman shows fall into a vast selection of categories, ranging from drama, storytelling, puppetry, and multimedia shows to stand-up, magic, improv, and dance.

Through its inaugural edition in the fall of 2010, the Festival gained a reputation for presenting many unique and diverse solo productions. Last year, the Festival concluded at the Theatre ROW in a closing ceremony during which Anna Deavere Smith was awarded for her outstanding achievements in solo performance. Four-time Academy Award nominee Marsha Mason joined the event to present the award. There were also other reasons to celebrate, such as high attendance and the impressive donations that were collected to support The Actors Fund. In the selection of forty-seven shows coming from six countries and seven states, audiences could appreciate the work of respected artists, such as Austin Pendleton (a director who brought three solo performances), Jelena Stupljanin (European movie star, a lead in Cirkus Columbia by Oscar-winning director Danis Tanovic), Suzen Murakoshi (an actress directed by Obie Award winner Ching Valdes-Aran), Bill Bowers (NYU professor of pantomime, also popular from his Broadway appearance as Zazu in The Lion King). Ten shows were sold out at the Festival. Cherry Jones, Sarah Paulson, and other well-known figures came to watch the art of solo performance on stage.

United Solo, established as the world’s largest solo theatre festival, remains consistent with its inaugural edition: celebrating individuality, promoting quality solo performances, and supporting The Actors Fund, the organization that serves professionals in the performing arts who are in need or transition.

Indie Theater Now introduces The FringeNYC Collection, a retrospective of some of the best work from the past 15 years of the New York International Fringe Festival. The collection of over 100 plays includes two plays by Omar Sangare: True Theatre Critic (The Best in Acting at The New York International Fringe Festival in 1997 and the Best Performance Award at the San Francisco Fringe Festival in 2008) and Juliet (The Best in Acting at The Theatre Festival on The Jerzy Grotowski Stage in Wroclaw, Poland in 1999).

Indie Theater Now is a project of The New York Theatre Experience, Inc. (NYTE), a dynamic, constantly expanding digital library of plays by playwrights whose work meets the criteria of the library publication program. As part of New Era Gallery’s ongoing 10th year celebration, the gallery will host Erased/Elzbieta by John Guare. The play about the Polish film legend, Elzbieta Czyzewska, was opened at the Atlantic Theater in New York City in May 2011. This time Omar Sangare will perform in exclusive presentation with the playwright himself.

This series of short documentaries focuses on Polish Americans who contribute to the innovation, creativity and vibrancy of America, featuring a wealth of prominent Polish Americans who are proud of their heritage while having an impact on America’s social and cultural fabric.

Three documentaries cover Omar Sangare’s career as an actor, director, writer, producer and educator. The films contain footage from rehearsals at the Atlantic Theater in New York City, as well as from Williams College, where he teaches in the Department of Theatre. Omar’s Polish roots and international accomplishments have been highlighted as a valuable cross-cultural model of the contemporary artist and scholar.

The videos have been posted in media that includes the official channel AmericaGOV on YouTube, American Embassies, and other government institutions.

Atlantic Theater Company is thrilled to present 10 X 25, a festival of ten-minute plays by twenty-five playwrights who have been produced by the Atlantic over the past twenty-five years. The lineup of playwrights includes John Guare, Ethan Coen, David Mamet, Sam Shepard, Annie Baker, David Pittu, Lucy Thurber, and many other well-established dramatists. All pieces will be presented in three separate two-week runs at Atlantic Stage 2.

John Guare wrote Erased/Elzbieta as a tribute to Elzbieta Czyzewska, with a special role for Omar Sangare. The play, directed by Neil Pepe and starring Glenn Fitzgerald and Omar Sangare, will be performed in Series A running:

Tales for Chosen Ones, a theatre performance based on short stories by Omar Sangare, is on tour. The show is directed by Krzysztof Czubak and performed by The Exit Theatre Company, awarded at the Tadeusz Kantor Festival in Wielopole, Poland. Starting with the Theatre Festival in Stalowa Wola, Tales for Chosen Ones will be presented in three cities in Poland. The tour celebrates this year’s World Theatre Day.
